We will not negotiate by email!

The Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN) and its public sector federations are dissapointed that the government continues to negotiate outside of the the agreed negotiation tables. In the middle of a negotiation, a government offer must be brought to the bargaining table, not delivered live on TV or via email. In light of the Treasury Board’s latest offers emailed earlier today, it seems the government needs another reminder.

Once again, we’re telling the government that inflation is affecting all our members; hard. The massive exodus of staff is affecting everyone, not just certain job titles. Wages that no longer attract workers adds fuel to the fire that is the crisis in the networks. It is a social issue. Working conditions that spur the exile of public service workers – who provide care, education and support – are a social issue. When will the government finally adopts a comprehensive approach to effectively manage the crisis in the networks? If we want to achieve concrete results at the bargaining tables, we need to address these glaring social issues.

Sadly, the CSN and its federations must remind the government that its recent misleading statements and offers on the sidelines of bargaining tables are a disrespectful and unproductive strategy.

In its attempt to impose public forums on labour organizations parallel to bargaining tables, the government is showing a flagrant lack of respect for the agreed upon negotiating process and the players involved. They are trying to force talks into a space that the parties have not agreed to form. By relegating worker mandated union negotiating committees, to this space, they become the sole masters of the agenda, the guests, the format and most importantly the topics.

We will therefore negotiate at the bargaining tables.
